Sorry for having yet another low-quality camera phone picture, but this was my piece from the last round of the Lehigh Valley Art Wars, held at the Connexions Gallery in Easton!
This time the competing artists were provided a surprise canvas, which in this case was this big 24” square. The theme was a tricky one: “recall”. Really, all the themes are kind of tough like that, and the best you can do is come in with your media and a good composition so that you can just roll with the first ideas that come to you.
This is actually the first time I’ve legit painted anything in forever, too! I did make a few mistakes, but still, fun learning experience (seriously, don’t put a canvas upright until you’re 100% sure the sumi ink is dry).
My family came up, along with a very close friend of mine, and I’m continually grateful for how supportive they’ve all been. They even replaced my beer when I dripped ink in my first one.
I got to compete with some really good artists too! The other winner was Matt Nixon, and I kind of regret not taking pictures of the other works at the time because his painting was really neat and his style kind of reminded me of Jamie Hewlett.
The Art Wars has been a great avenue for meeting lots of talented people, and I’m really looking forward to seeing who I’ll be up against in the semi-finals.
